Almonds prefer light, well-drained, somewhat sandy soil. Mulching helps retain moisture and helps to stabilize the soil temperature. Plant almond trees in early Spring. Almonds grow best in full sun in a location where cold air or frost will not settle. Choose a protected location that is sheltered from wind. Water regularly, at least weekly, during the first year. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Almond trees are prized as ornamentals because of their beautiful Spring flowers.
