Medium-sized, dark-skinned fig with a strawberry colored interior and rich flavor. One of the most popular of the home garden varieties planted today. Producing 2 crops each year in zones 8-10, the early Breba crop, is large and most often abundant. The later main crop is medium size with good production. The skin of the fruit often cracks when it is ripe. Mission figs are prized by chefs everywhere for their sweet rich taste and can be eaten fresh, cooked, dried or used to make preserves. This is the original fig brought to California and planted by the Franciscan Monks in the 1800s.

Planting & Care
Figs will tolerate any type of soil that is well drained. Figs require 8 hours a day of full sun and long hot summers to produce fruit. Black Mission is not as cold hardy as other varieties and must be protected from cold Winters. They like regular water to get them established but are drought tolerate once the tree they are. Water deeply at least once a week the first year. The sap of fig trees can be irritating to some who are sensitive to latex, if you are wear gloves when pruning the trees or harvesting the fruit. Figs are easily be trained as espaliers and some varieties do well in containers.
