Burbank Plum

This most unique and widely adaptable fruit is by far one of Luther Burbanks most unusual selections. Introduced in about 1888 from seed received from Japan sent to Burbank, this variety was an immediate stand out. Though obviously a plum the taste was far from the common plum. A Suttle sweetness with almost and apricot aftertaste made this a delightful eating experience.

Description

Prunus salicina 'Burbank'

This most unique and widely adaptable fruit is by far one of Luther Burbanks most unusual selections. Introduced in about 1888 from seed received from Japan sent to Burbank, this variety was an immediate stand out. Though obviously a plum the taste was far from the common plum. A Suttle sweetness with almost and apricot aftertaste made this a delightful eating experience. Its long hang time meant one could harvest the Burbank plum for weeks while it hangs on the tree just getting sweeter and more intensely flavored. Red over gold skin with orange yellow flesh that has a crunch when firm ripe. Picked early the Burbank plum has a mild flavor with a rich tropical flavor. As it ripens the rich sweet apricot like flavor become more pronounced. However, the tight skin of the Burbank ensures the crunch never leaves the eating experience.

Planting & Care
Plums prefer well-drained soil. If poor drainage is suspected, consider mounding 18 to 24 inches high by 4 feet wide or build a raised bed of 12 to 18 inches high and 3 feet square. Plant directly in the mound or raised bed. Mulching helps retain moisture and stabilizes the soil temperature. Mulch to 3 to 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 feet outside the canopy. Plum grow best in full sun in a location where cold air or frost will not settle favor a location with exposure to morning sun. Choose a protected location that is sheltered from wind when possible. Most are early blooming and can be affected by adverse early season weather. Water regularly, to get established, during the first year. Plum trees are extremely fast growing and will grow to 20' tall if you let them. All fruit trees can be kept under 10 feet tall. Pruning in the summer to control the height of your tree is recommended to simplify maintenance and harvesting
