Description

Citrus sinensis 'Cara Cara'

A more recent introduction at the grocery store the Cara Cara has become an early season favorite coming in almost 1 month earlier than Washington Navel. A pink fleshed navel orange originally from Venezuela, the tree and the fruit characteristics are similar to Washington navel oranges but the flesh is rosy pink. Cara Cara is a new orange that did not enter the US consumer produce market until the 1980s' and was carried only by specialty markets for years afterwards. It is an early to midseason ripening Navel Orange with sweet rosy pink flesh with a distinctive cranberry like flavor. The juicy pink flesh is seedless and has low acid. The Cara Cara hangs well on the tree as they ripen from November through April. If you live in a colder climate, simply plant them in a container. Bring your tree indoors near a sunny window, and let the intoxicating citrus scent brighten your home during cold winter days.

Planting & Care
Navel oranges do well in a wide range of soils. The tree must have well-draining soil and will not tolerate standing in water. If poor drainage is suspected create raised beds 3 Ft. x 3 Ft. and plant directly in the raised bed using native soil. Select a location with at least 8 hours of direct sun a day. Citrus like to be grown on dry side so be carful not to overwater. Tree grows into a densely branched, full rounded canopy. Navel orange trees will reach 20' outdoors but can easily be kept 7' - 10' with regular pruning. Will tolerate occasional light frost. Navel oranges are best for eating fresh.
