Description

Prunus Interspecific Hybrid 'Flavor Delight'

The Flavor Delight has become well known for its adaptability in both low chill and marginal apricot areas. An early introduction from Floyd Zaiger, world famous fruit tree hybridist, this unique plumcot is a cross that favors the apricot in appearance and results in one fine flavored fruit with the apricot overtones buffered by the slight acidity provided by the plum , the perfect acid/sugar balance. Like most cots it is an early season ripening variety making it one of the finest early season fruits. The Flavor Delight set well in marginal apricot zones in both the more marginal Apricot areas and the Low chill zones where Flavor Delight does exceptionally well. Self-fruitful but still better crops with a pollinating selection like Golden Sweet Apricot or the White Knockout apricot or the Santa Rosa Plum.

Planting & Care
Plumcots prefer well-drained soil. If poor drainage is suspected, consider mounding 18 to 12 inches high by 4 feet wide of build a raised bed of 12 to 18 inches high and 3 feet square. Plant directly in the mound or raised bed. Mulching helps retain moisture and stabilizes the soil temperature. Mulch to 3 to 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 feet outside the canopy. Plumcots grow best in full sun in a location where cold air or frost will not settle. Choose a protected location that is sheltered from wind. Most are early blooming and can be affected by adverse early season weather. Water regularly, to get established, during the first year. Plumcot trees are extremely fast growing and will grow to 20' tall if you let them. All fruit trees can be kept under 10 feet tall. Pruning in the summer to control the height of your tree is recommended to simplify maintenance and harvesting.
