Olea europaea 'Frantoio'
Frantoio is a classic Tuscan variety that is highly prized for its rich fragrant and spicy tasting oil. A compact narrow habit makes the Frantoio a popular selection for commercial high-density planting. Not as tolerant to the extreme heats as Spanish varieties this Italian selection is more adapted to the more moderate climates even doing well in the Pacific Northwest. A great pollinator for other varieties the Frantoio is also able to produce a sizeable crop without a pollinating partner nearby. As with all olives the trees Frantoio is drought tolerant and highly ornamental, though prized primarily for its fruit. A late season Ripening variety that is dark purple when full ripe. Great for curing or olive oil.
18 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide. A first choice for high density planting. Excellent container plant.
Plant 5 to 8 feet on center. Ideal for high density planting
Olive trees are drought resistant trees that grow best in alkaline soils with little fertilization. Provide good drainage. Plant anytime from early Spring to early Fall. This tree enjoys warm and humid environments, full sunlight or partial shade. The Frantoio should have afternoon shade in hot interior climates. Olive trees do not do well in windy locations. The trees are evergreen, long-lived, beautiful ornamentals with soft, gray-green foliage. Frantoio has a spreading but contained growth habit and can grow up to 20 feet outdoors in ideal climates. In a container on a patio or indoors it will remain compact, measuring 7' - 10' at full maturity, with regular pruning.
