Description

Malus domestica 'Golden Delicious'

One of the most popular apple varieties grown worldwide, the Yellow Delicious has been a favorite for over 100 years. A chance seedling discovered on the farm of Anderson Mullins in Clay County, West Virginia, it quickly became a regional favorite. All rights were sold to the Stark Brothers Nursery in 1914, who paired it with their popular Red Delicious apple as a pollinator. Yellow Delicious is not thought to be related to Red delicious. However, the Golden Delicious today is recognized as the same variety as Yellow Delicious. The productive tree produces an abundant crop of large size yellow fruit with white flesh and in most cases does not require a pollinator. The flavor is mild but distinct. Sweet and firm with a great crunch. Widely adapted to many climates and a popular pollinator for many popular apple varieties. A mid-season ripening selection the Yellow Delicious remains an important variety for baking, juicing, apple sauce, dehydrating and of course fresh eating.

Planting & Care
>Apples tolerate a wide range of soil types, but like all fruit trees grow best in well-drained, loamy soil. Provide full sun favoring the morning sun with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. Apple favor higher humidity's and moderate summer temperatures, in hot dry climates protect the tree from sunburn by providing protection from the late afternoon sun. Either by providing shade or with whitewashing the trunk. Water at least twice a week for the first year. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Mulch the tree to 3 to 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 feet outside the canopy of the tree. To keep root cool and cut down on soil evaporation. Apples benefit from pruning to maintain size and structure. Keep trees at less than 10 feet to allow for easy care and harvest. Check with your local ag extension to find the apple care recommendations for your area.
