Malus domestica 'Hudson's Golden Gem'

Hudson’s Golden Gem, Malus domestica ‘Hudson’s Golden Gem’ is by far one of the finest flavored apples of all. This is a big apple as russet skinned varieties go and with its light golden skin and crisp juicy flavor the Hudson’s Golden Gem has become a first choice for fresh eating and for cider or juicing. Discovered as a chance seedling at the Hudson Nursery of Tangent Oregon in 1931, this apple is now considered a prized heirloom, though it is a more recent introduction as heirloom varieties go. This is due to the outstanding flavor qualities reminiscent of many older cherished apple varieties. As with other russet skinned apples the old fashion pear flavor jumps out with a sugary sweet nutty richness. As a matter of fact, because of its somewhat elongated shape it was marketed as a pear when it was first introduced. Today this variety is a must have for anyone who appreciates the goodness of a truly uniquely flavored fruit. known for having great disease resistance and long hang time on the tree. Planting & Care
Plant in a location with good drainage. Apples will tolerate wet soil as long as it drains fast. Look for full sun locations that favor the early morning sun. This is the drying sun and helps to cut down on moisture related diseases, though disease resistant always plant in a location with good air drainage and keep the trees canopy open with pruning to improve air flow within the canopy to help avoid moisture related issues. In warm dry climates providing a layer or mulch 3 to 4 inches deep out 3 feet from the outside of the canopy will help to keep roots cool and cut down surface evaporation. This will help to extend the period between watering thereby helping to save on water. Prune to control the overall height of the tree. It is recommended to keep all fruit tree below 10 feet tall for ease of maintenance and harvest. Summer pruning is the best way to control height and spread.
