Is This Plant Self Pollinating?

Lapins Cherry Tree is self-fertile, but the fruit crop will be larger if the tree is planted with a second tree.

Description

Prunus avium 'Lapin'

Large, high quality fruit is sweet with firm juicy flesh. Lapins is a self fruitful cherry that has excellent quality fruit that is resistant to cracking. It is a good backyard cherry because you can plant just one tree. While Lapins is self fruitful, it also acts as a good pollenator for other sweet cherries. These big, firm fruit are at their best eaten fresh, but you could also use them in jams, sauces, or preserved in classic maraschino style.

Planting & Care

Cherries grow best in full sun in a location where cold air or frost will not settle. Choose a protected location that is sheltered from wind. Water regularly, at least weekly, during the first year. Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. Deep soak established trees when the top few inches of the soil is dry. Cherries prefer well-drained soil. Mulching helps retain moisture and stabilize the soil temperature. When harvesting cherries, pick them with the stems attached, and avoid tearing off the fruit spur that will produce fruit year after year. An added bonus with cherry trees is the beautiful blossoms that precede the fruit each spring.
