Is This Plant Self Pollinating?

Red Globe Grape is self-fertile, but the fruit crop will be larger if the tree is planted with a second tree.

Description

Vitis vinifera

A great table grape variety. Large to very large-sized grape with a crisp, red skin; seeded, well-flavored flesh. Red Globe grapes are mildly sweet and flavorful, not as tangy as Flame or as sweet as Thompson. Because these grapes are so big, they can be frozen and used as ice cubes in fruit drinks.

Planting & Care

While grapes tolerate a fairly wide range of soil chemistry and conditions, a pH of 5.5 - 6.5 is generally recommended. Grapes prefer deep, moderately fertile soils and full sun to partial shade. Plant in early Spring or early Fall. Water the soil around the vine at least once a week, and more frequently during dry spells. Mulch to keep the soil moist throughout the fruiting season. Grapes will tolerate warm and humid environments and are xcellent used as an ornamental, for covering summer shade arbors or leafy walls. Grapes require annual pruning for high quality and production. Pruning during Winter is recommended. Grapes are one of the main natural dietary sources of resveratrol, a potent antioxidant. Grape vines are very heavy producers and require support from a substantial trellis.
