While grapes tolerate a fairly wide range of soil chemistry and conditions, a pH of 5.5 - 6.5 is generally recommended. Grapes prefer deep, moderately fertile soils and full sun to partial shade. Plant in early Spring or early Fall. Water the soil around the vine at least once a week, and more frequently during dry spells. Mulch to keep the soil moist throughout the fruiting season. Grapes will tolerate warm and humid environments and are xcellent used as an ornamental, for covering summer shade arbors or leafy walls. Grapes require annual pruning for high quality and production. Pruning during Winter is recommended. Grapes are one of the main natural dietary sources of resveratrol, a potent antioxidant. Grape vines are very heavy producers and require support from a substantial trellis.
