The most well know of all mandarins, the Frost Owari Satsuma is one of 2 Owari Satsuma selections commonly sold as Owari Satsuma. Known for the tremendous hardiness, wonderful mandarin flavor and ease of peeling, the Frost selection has a bit smoother skin than the Silverhill Owari. The Owari Satsuma selection traces back to ancient times in Japan, where it still remained one of the most popular mandarin varieties. Seedless, juicy and flavorful, the fact that it is one of the earliest of the mandarins to ripen keeps it in high demand. The Frost Owari remains on the tree for months after being fully ripe.

Planting & Care

Citrus must have well-draining soil and will not tolerate standing in water. Choose another location or create a raised bed or mound your planting at least 12 to 18 inches above grade if poor drainage is suspected. Requires full sun, with at least 8 hours a day favoring the morning sun. Water regularly when getting established. Mulch to ensure that roots remain cool and to retain surface moisture. Tree grows into a densely branched, full rounded crown. Frost Owari Satsuma will reach 15 to 18' outdoors but can easily be kept 7' - 10' with regular pruning. The flowers are white and very fragrant. Will tolerate occasional light frost. Navel oranges are best for eating fresh.
