Description

Pyrus communis 'Sensation Red Bartlett'

The Sensation Red Bartlett is an heirloom selection of Bartlett originating as a bud sport or mutation of a Bartlett pear in the 1930s. Most consider this red selection much sweeter than its namesake. Definitely the dark red skin adds to the eye appeal of this early ripening variety. This pear can be picked when firm ripe before the dark red color intensifies. At this time, it is crunchy and mildly sweet. However, as with most pears the Sensation red Bartlett gets better once picked and allowed to mellow. The Dark red skin intensifies, as the flesh becomes buttery smooth and juicy the sugar content just keeps growing. Though self-fruitful in most western climates, it would be best to include a pollinator with it is colder climates. Any other pear variety, such as Bosc or Comics should work fine. Bartlett should not be used.

Planting & Care
Pears tolerate a wide range of soil types, but like all fruit trees grow best in well-drained, loamy soil. Provide full sun favoring the morning sun with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. Pears favor moderate humidity's and moderate summer temperatures, in hot dry climates protect the tree from sunburn by providing protection from the late afternoon sun. Either by providing shade or with whitewashing or wrapping the trunk. Water at least twice a week for the first year. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Mulch the tree to 3 to 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 feet outside the canopy of the tree. This keeps the root cool and cuts down on soil evaporation thereby decreasing your water needs. Pears benefit from pruning to maintain size and structure. Keeping trees at less than 10 feet allows for easy care and harvest. Check with your local ag extension to find what Pear care recommendations are for your area.
