Description

Citrus maxima 'Valentine'

The Valentine Pummelo might be the most unusual citrus ever. A complex series of crosses done by the breeders at UC Riverside as far back as the 1950's. The crosses included Grapefruits, Blood Orange and Mandarins. The results were a number the most popular Grapefruit varieties sold today, the Oro Blanco and the Melogold Grapefruit. The Valentine wasn't quite the fruit they were looking for and went unappreciated for many years. Only in recent years have we become aware of this outstanding flavored fruit. The heart shaped red fleshed antioxidant rich fruit is loaded with anthocyanin's, making is both delicious and healthy. With a distingue sweet berry like flavor and low acidity it eats more like a large orange than a Grapefruit or typical pummelo. With a long hang time you will enjoy the Valentine pummelo from January through April. The Valentine Pummelo does have seeds, but they are easy to eat around when you get caught up in the flavor of this most desirable selection of Citrus.

Planting & Care
Valentine Pummelo's do well in sandy soil, but they will adapt to most native soils. This tree must have good draining soil and will not tolerate standing in water. If poor drainage is suspected plant in a mound 24 inches high and 4 feet wide of a raised bed 12 to 18 inches high and 3 feet wide. Mulching helps retain moisture and helps to stabilize the soil temperature as well as preventing the mound from settling before the roots get established. Requires full sun with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight favoring the morning sun. Trees tend to be large and bushy but can easily be kept 7' - 10' with regular pruning. Makes an excellent container plant. The large white flowers are very fragrant.
