Is This Plant Self Pollinating?

Warren Pear is self-fertile, but the fruit crop will be larger if the tree is planted with a second tree.

Description

Pyrus pyrifolia 'Warren'

A fine flavored dessert quality pear with exceptional disease resistance as well as one of the most widely adaptable pear varieties today. The Warren pear grows well in the extreme cold of zone 4, tolerating temperatures into the -20's. But is as equally at home in the mild climate of zone 9. The medium to large size fruit is a faded green with hints of red. The fruit has a long thick neck, is pyramidal in shape, with a wonderfully smooth, sweet texture, very juicy with no grit. Considered by some to be one of the finest flavored pears. The Warren shows great resistance to fireblight so is a first choice for pears lovers in areas where fireblight is a problem. Self fruitful in milder climates but the Warren can take time coming into production. In colder climates it is always good to include another pear pollinating partner. Comice, Bartlett or one of the other disease resistant selections like Blakes Pride or Harrow Delight.

Planting & Care
p>Pears tolerate a wide range of soil types, but like all fruit trees grow best in well-drained, loamy soil. Provide full sun favoring the morning sun with at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. Pears favor moderate humidity's and moderate summer temperatures, in hot dry climates protect the tree from sunburn by providing protection from the late afternoon sun. Either by providing shade or with whitewashing or wrapping the trunk. Water at least twice a week for the first year. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Mulch the tree to 3 to 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 feet outside the canopy of the tree. This keeps the root cool and cuts down on soil evaporation thereby decreasing your water needs. Pears benefit from pruning to maintain size and structure. Keeping trees at less than 10 feet allows for easy care and harvest. Check with your local ag extension to find what Pear care recommendations are for your area.
